Professional Development Experiences
• Substitute Teacher at Leap Ahead Preschool: September 2017-Present
As a substitute teacher for Leap Ahead Preschool, I have been provided with multiple opportunities to collaborate with experienced early childhood educators including Phobe Frye, director of Leap Ahead Preschool, and Trina Daniels, assistant director. This experience has impacted my pedagogy of young learners as I have learned more about the critical social-emotional development that is taking place at this age and how we as educators can enhance learning with differentiated instruction. By creating learning experiences that are partially focused on the social-emotional development of students, children not only receive content knowledge but also develop as social beings.

Along with teaching students positive social-emotional behaviors, I have also been able to differentiate my instruction to meet the individual needs of the children. I have learned that differentiation is a powerful piece in the learning experience for all children as it makes these critical learning experiences applicable to the individual child. Above all, I have been blessed with an incredible opportunity each time I visit Leap Ahead Preschool to model to the children how to be an active and respectful learner in a classroom community that is centered on the development of the individual child.
• Attended Dr. Maure Ann Metzger (author of Prison Called School ) sessions: January 2018
I attended a series of sessions headed by Dr. Maure Ann Metzger, the author of A Prison Called School. During these sessions, I had the opportunity of collaborating with pre-service and current educators as well as Dr. Maure Ann Metzger herself. The discussion was heavily based upon how educators can create an effective learning environment for learners where school does not become a hurdle for them in life. One of the many ways educators can do this is by enhancing student empowerment.
Teachers who enhance student empowerment recognize students' need for voice, choice, and action. Students' voice, choice, and action can be fostered through real-world learning experiences in that these experiences ultimately inspire these students to work to their full potential. This ultimately supports students' path to a solid future. |
